Mountain skiing and a striking remote village
Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal
and one of its most outstanding scenic attractions.
Designated a natural park, it attracts walkers throughout the year for its
stunning flora, and skiers in winter to the resorts of Penhas da
Saúde and Torre. The views from and around Torre are fabulous,
and the scenery of the nearby Zêzere Valley,
with one of Europe's deepest U-shaped glacial gorges formed during the Ice
Age, is extraordinary.
Sheep graze on the upper slopes, the source of the milk used for the
local cheese that is famous throughout the country.
In the area is a rich heritage of sleepy hilltop walled villages and
castles. The village of LINHARES stands out for its medieval
atmosphere and castle, with cobbled alleyways,
15th century granite houses, and some excellent views.
Its parish church contains three outstanding paintings (Adoration of the
Magi, Descent from the Cross, and Annunciation), believed
to be the work of Grão Vasco, one of the country's most famous painters.
Southwest of Serra da Estrela is one of the country's most picturesque rural
villages, the striking village of PIODÃO. Once remote, tourism has
brought it somewhat back to life. The schist houses have been restored,
with their darkness contrasting wonderfully with the bright white parish
church and blue doors and windows.
