Lisbon shopping guide
FNAC, the European giant for books and music is found in Lisbon at the Armazéns do Chiado and Colombo shopping malls,
and that is where most locals go for the latest sounds and reads. But for some alternative or hard-to-find editions and publications, see these smaller
shops below:
Bertrand - Rua Garrett 73-75, Chiado - (www.bertrand.pt)
Behind a façade of blue and white tiles is the city's oldest and
best-known bookshop, founded in 1732. It stocks a reasonable selection of
English-language books (including translations of Portuguese writers such as
Fernando Pessoa), guidebooks, and foreign magazines.
Buchholz - Rua Duque de Palmela, 4 Uptown - (www.buchholz.pt)
This bookstore covers everything from astronomy to classical music, gay
literature, and multilingual publications (including English, French,
German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian). There are also classical and New
Age audio CDs.
Favula Urbis - Rua de Augusto Rosa, 27 Alfama - (www.fabula-urbis.pt)
Sells only books about Lisbon, mostly in Portuguese, but there are also some selections in English and other languages. The city's
history, art, gastronomy, architecture, and more in publications of the past and the present. An upper floor often hosts recitals and
temporary exhibitions.
Discoteca Amalia - Rua Aurea, 274, Downtown
Named after the Fado diva, this shop specializes in traditional
Portuguese music offering recordings by the country's top Fado singers. The
staff is always happy to make recommendations.
Flur - Doca do
Jardim do Tabaco, Alfama
Perhaps the best record shop in the city with an impressive dance music
selection.
V-Records - Rua do Diario de Noticias, 69, Bairro Alto
Shop run by a local DJ with a good selection of vinyl house,
drum'n'bass, and hip hop.
