A survivor of the Great Earthquake
Located east of Comercio
Square on Rua da Alfandega, this 16th century church is where an old 15th
century Jewish temple once stood.
The interior seen today was rebuilt
after the earthquake of 1755 with just one nave, but the elaborate doorway survived the
earthquake, and is a brilliant example of early Manueline architecture.
It is decorated with angels, beasts, flowers, armillary
spheres, and the cross of the Order of Christ. Also shown is Our Lady of
Mercy sheltering King Manuel I and Queen Leonor beneath her stone mantle.
