Lisbon's trendiest waterfront
The dockland development in
front of
Santa Apolonia train station right below the hill of Alfama
is a complete contrast to the
medieval atmosphere of this ancient quarter.
It has become one of the hippest places in the city, with former warehouses turned into a sleek
nightclub, high-class eateries, and trendy shops.
It is a great place to
admire the immense Tagus River at sunset and to relax after wandering through the
alleys of Alfama. The restaurants have outdoor tables facing the river and attract a largely local crowd.
The name "Tobacco Garden Dock" recalls the time when it was Lisbon's main depot for storing tobacco.
