MEMORIA CHURCH
A church-memorial
Memoria Church is an elegant neoclassical domed church that stands as a reminder or "memory" of
King Jose I's escape from an assassination plot on this site in 1758.
It
was built two years later, and its white dome, although smaller in size, is
reminiscent of another Lisbon church, the Estrela Basilica.
It has a
marble-clad interior, a small chapel, and the tomb of Marquês de Pombal, the 18th century leader responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon
after the 1755 earthquake.
