TOP 10 LISBON EXPERIENCES:
2| Hunt for Real Treasures: The Antique Tiles
The Tile Museum is one of Lisbon's must-see attractions, but you'll also become fascinated by the profusion of tile panels and designs all over the city.
Tiles cover façades of ordinary homes and the interiors of countless palaces and churches. Although the use of decorative tile is found all over the Mediterranean, it was in Lisbon that it truly developed into an art form. Instead of just geometric patterns, they evolved into big ceramic paintings, mostly in blue and white, inspired by the porcelain the Portuguese brought from China.
Today, Lisbon truly is the decorative tile capital of the world and an open-air tile museum. You'll constantly find yourself drawn to these dazzling works of art, photographing or even acquiring a few to take home. The antique tiles in some specialist shops are real treasures and naturally expensive, but you'll also see many irresistible reproductions at affordable prices (the three best shops are Fábrica Sant'anna, Loja dos Descobrimentos and Solar).
In addition to the Tile Museum, the main attractions for antique tile lovers are Fronteira Palace, São Vicente de Fora Monastery, and the Sintra National Palace.
