FAQ for the Lisbon GoCars GPS Guided Tours
What is a GoCar?
A GoCar is an intelligent 3-wheeler convertible vehicle, which has an onboard computer and GPS system to guide you round pre-programmed tour routes. It has an audio
unit which provides ongoing commentary about the sights of the city. It has a 1-gallon (3.8 litres) gasoline-powered engine with a range of
approximately 60 miles (nearly 100 kilometres) and a top speed of just over 30
miles per hour (approx. 50 kilometres per hour).
GoCar has been been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, The New York Times and in the Sunday Times. Also on television including
Tech TV, CNN Headline News, Channel 5's Evening Magazine and NBC 11's Morning Show.

How many people can ride in a GoCar?
The GoCar is intended for a maximum of 2 passengers. Both passengers must wear helmets to comply with local law.
Are children allowed to ride in the cars?
Unfortunately not. The minimum age requirement to ride in a GoCar is 18 years,
and drivers should have a valid driving licence for car or motorcycles.
Is it safe?
Totally. The cars are sporty and fun, but also completely safe and easy to drive.
The cars were designed by a qualified engineer and have enjoyed solid workmanship in their construction and
rigorous maintenance thereafter. Simple handlebar steering, dual hydraulic disk
brakes and a stainless steel roll cage with a sturdy fibreglass body provide for
complete driving confidence.
How long does the tour take?
In Lisbon, there are 4 different GoCars tours which last from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. However, this is just an average time since you can take as long or as little as you wish.
It all depends on which detours you want to take, or which sights you want to stop at
for a better look.
You can stop and park whenever you want: the car always knows where you are located and will provide audio instructions as soon as you start again.
Can I stray off the route?
Of course. With the sophisticated GPS system, the car knows where you are even
if you don't! With you in the driver's seat, it not only tells you where to turn, it also tells the stories that bring Lisbon to life.
You may follow the instructions, or blaze your own trail around the city.
Can I cross Lisbon's bridges?
Crossing the 25th April or Vasco da Gama bridge is not allowed, but you can certainly approach them
from below for some marvellous photograph opportunities.
Can the car get up all of Lisbon's hills?
When fully loaded with 2 passengers, the GoCars will only have problems with the very steepest of Lisbon's hills and the GPS system will help you find the routes which can
be safely navigated. It is perfectly possible to make the climb to highpoints such as St. Jorge's Castle and the Miradouro da Graça.
What points of interest will I see?
The different GoCars tours in Lisbon pass by more than 150 points of interest. Which ones you see will depend on the tour you take, or the route you follow.
Remember, you can follow the pre-programmed routes or make your own way round the city to see whatever
interests you personally.
What pre-programmed tours are available?
- tour of East Lisbon
- tour of West Lisbon
- tour of the Belem district
- tour of the EXPO district
Are the tours available in foreign languages?
The GoCars audio commentaries are available in English, French and Portuguese. Spanish and German will be available shortly.
What clothing do I need?
Lisbon generally enjoys a warm climate, and temperatures rarely go below 10ºC even in mid-winter. However, since these cars are
open-top convertibles we suggest you bring some kind of warm
coat or jacket just in case - it can always be stored in the car's trunk!
