The name means "the beach of the apples," although you won't see any apple trees here. No one knows for sure how it got its name, but what is known is that this is a great family beach.
For decades it has been reached by a fun old tram from Sintra, although you should check at the tourism office if it is running when you're in town.
It seems to be out of service more often than not, as the line undergoes renovation from time to time.
The beach has fine sand and lively bars and restaurants to suit all budgets. Before you return to your hotel, use the showers, changing rooms, or the sports facilities nearby.
